      <image:title>Desserts - Great Invention Cookies</image:title>
<image:caption>The Great Invention has to do with the cuckoo clock showing 7 til 7 and the baking taking 5 or 6 minutes. 1 ¾ sticks of butter 1 ¼ cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1 cup finely chopped walnuts 2 cups of self-rising flour* Mix ingredients. Roll into balls and place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake 5 or 6 minutes in a 350 degree oven. *If you use regular white flour, add 1 tsp. of baking powder and ½ tsp. salt.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Desserts - Peches Paysannes</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a spontaneous dessert that happens during peach season which coincided with Tante Suzanne’s annual visit to the grandparents’ house. It was not “tres distingue” but Suzanne would peel a fresh peach, cut bites off the stone, and drop them in her wine glass. Then she would fill the glass with red wine and stir in a spoon of sugar. She’s the one second to the right, working on her dessert. Then Anny, on the left, would decide that was a good idea and imitate Suzanne. And then Mamy on the right and Lepere in the middle would have to concede it was tasty — if very “pluque” — Lepere’s word for bumpkin—and they would make their own Peches Paysannes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Party Food - This is one of my fondest memories. Honey, Trudy and I would get together for a picnic, loving talk and support at the farm. We would have watercress sandwiches from the watercress gathered around the spring house and pond. I think they were only plain white bread, watercress and mayonnaise but I remember them as absolutely delicious! I am sure it was also the farm and the company of dear friends that added to the experience but at 87 the memory brings joy to my heart. They were wonderful times. — Megan Krivchenia</image:title>

<image:title>Party Food - Lou dug a pit near the house, about 12 inches deep and about 8 feet square. He filled the pit with firewood, a huge pile that stood about 6 feet tall, and lit it the night before the corn roast. Then he tended the fire all night and into the next morning, building up a thick bed of coals. Around 10 in the morning he knocked the pile down, removed any big logs left. This is when he needed extra hands because the next step had to be done quickly. The burlap bags which had been soaking in the water bin were pulled out and half were spread out on the hot coals. They steamed angrily. The corn was laid on top of the burlap, side by side, end to end, as quickly as possible. Then the second batch of burlap bags went on top of the corn, carefully blanketing the corn. As fast as possible the dirt was shoveled back into the pit, burying the burlap and corn, and sealing the hot coals from air. Now the corn roasted for 6 hours. About the time the guests arrived for the party, Lou shoveled the dirt off the burlap and carefully pulled back the burlap. He checked the corn for roastedness. If it was ready, he pulled the corn out of the burlap sandwich and sent it to the tables for serving. Everyone shucked their own corn and seasoned as needed. Actually, it was so sweet and so nutty-tasting from the roasting that it really didn’t need any butter or seasoning.</image:title>

      <image:title>Index of Recipes - Feedback</image:title>
<image:caption>Funny word, “feedback.” From Cherry: I have just spent the last hour reading a lot of the information on this site. As I have purchased to many green peppers this week I was planning on making stuffed peppers today. How handy! On the liver recipe: I must have been a terrible best friend. I challenged Mary Paull to do two things that she did NOT want to do. First, I made her ride the horses with me. Even though her sisters where very accomplished equestrians as evidenced by their walls of ribbons, MP was very afraid of horses. We did go riding and we had fun. The second thing was I invited her to eat Anny's liver with sour cream. She did and I believe she liked it. (She also made fun of the watercress sandwiches, saying we were eating grass sandwiches. My classmates loved the teasing, but they always had a bite.) I enjoyed all that I read, even crying at times. I felt the story about the cookies was sad but a fitting end to this cookbook. I also enjoyed Lassiter's story with Wick's woodcuts. I love all of this. From Mark Krivchenia: Some reflections on my aesthetic…. What I find most beautiful in an outdoor landscape looks like a WV hillside farm: not very manicured or planned, a bit ramshackle but mostly neat, old and worn but still working. I would take this over an English garden or Monet's garden anyday. Thus my aesthetic. Of course this was a place of some of my fondest childhood memories so really no surprise. Nature plus positive emotions. If you combine this with Oglebay Park, you have the landscape of my heart. I loved that row of purple iris (laid against an old telephone pole?) in your parking lot. I have tried to create that look in every yard I have had since (to my wife's chagrin--only permitted in the backyard!) A stone spring house with a clear stream running out of it, with plants you could eat. The pond in the back was a young boy's prized landscape. I have loved ponds ever since, but alas, I now realize how they are deeply destructive of the native landscape. It was a working landscape--not manicured, nor too serious. Today they might call it a hobby farm, but with a disheveled look. I loved the inside of the house too: old wood floors that creaked terribly. A real fireplace in the kitchen. A worn but beautiful rug on the living room floor (I thought it beautiful). I know that rug well because we played many games of Hearts sitting on it. So this was always the place which would have been my dream home, but alas I got very distracted. first, trying to save the world, and finally just trying to be a decent human being. I think my brother's attempt at this was his farm in Kentucky, but this is a much different aesthetic. Nonetheless, Kamp Krivchenia was for our children what the Loustau farm was for us. (West Virginia hills are much prettier than Kentucky hills--at least the ones near Ashland, KY.) I am leaving out of course that I was in love with Carrie, Tina, Cherry and then Tina again over the course of my youth at various points! Oh dear, perhaps these are all sentimental reminiscences? But I don't think so. Ours (I am speaking of me and my brothers) was a privileged and happy childhood. We were oblivious to the struggles of the adult world and the larger world as a whole. We were loved and cared for, and our friendship with your family was a part of that. I think this prepared us well psychologically for the world (secure attachment) but perhaps not for the trials and struggles of the larger world. And goodness knows even white privileged folks have their fair share of suffering. Having now been a parent, I can only say you try to do your best..... There were other emotions and learnings. I learned to fear horses at your farm and don't really like them to this day. I think there was always some competition between Henry and myself--we are family friends, not close friends. I was always a bit jealous of the Country Day crowd--we went to public schools and didn't have a cool "fair" each spring. Wheeling was a lesson in class distinctions that I only came to understand later in life.... Jenny, I am loving the writings you post. You write beautifully. And I read Lassiter's short story (about the cat and her father)--powerful and great writing. I applaud the publishing house your family is setting up. We all need to hear stories of hope and resilience. Thank you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Works in Progress - The Any Moron Can Cook Notebook - This one, in Tina’s files, doesn’t mention the peppers in the ingredient list. Nobody taught Anny how to cook —her mother simply didn’t— and she refused to teach any of us how to cook. She said any idiot could open a cookbook and cook. So this is a group effort to teach the idiots how to cook, before it’s too late.</image:title>

      <image:title>Works in Progress - Poor Owen</image:title>
<image:caption>One day Poor Owen was wandering through town and came upon the merchant's house. There he saw the Jewel on her balcony, brushing her ebony hair with an ivory comb and studying her opalescent skin in a silver mirror. Poor Owen was dazzled, and every day after he returned for another glimpse. The townspeople shook their heads and clucked their tongues at this. For, they said, the Jewel is a treasure Poor Owen can never afford.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Works in Progress - Poor Owen</image:title>
<image:caption>One morning while Poor Owen was admiring the Jewel, one of her suitors appeared. "I have offered you all that I own," the suitor cried. "Yet you will not have me! Why?!" The Jewel replied daintily, "You are a farmer. You offer me nothing but dirt and smelly cows. Bring me silver, rubies, gold, and diamonds, and I will have you." As the suitor staggered away in despair, Poor Owen thought about silver, rubies, gold, and diamonds.</image:caption>
